California - Air Pollution (this is where I grew up)
Alaska - Suicide (this is where I currently live for another year or so)
Now here's the truth between the two:
California - California Highway Patrol or Emissions Testing. Take your pick.
Alaska - People who think that 4WD or AWD means that they have 100% traction at normal (and above normal) speeds on roads. Seriously. These people were born and raised here and haven't figure out that when there is snow, or better yet, a 2 inch thick sheet of ice covering the entire road, you have to slow down!

I was intrigued by that also. My brother-in-law manages the recycling program at the GM plant in Ft. Wayne. GM and its subcontractors are doing an amazing job of recycling at that plant, and to hear him talk about it, GM has wholly bought in to the idea of being green.

After doing a bit of research, it appears that, over the past 20 years, Texas' HS graduation rate has gone from 56% in 1994 to 87.7% in 2012. Also, that number has increased by almost 10% between 2007 and 2012.
In reality, it looks like we're getting significantly better. ETA After looking up a bit more, I found that the Huffingtoan Post, in 2011, listed Texas as being in the top 9 states for High School graduation rates.

Seriously, Louisiana ranks dead last in so many vital considerations (health, education, infant mortality rate) that the only thing we can be proud of is our cuisine. Best in the nation, possibly the world.
And of course we have Duck Dynasty (actually here in my hometown). Ugh. Speaking of, check out the Robertson boys before they decided to ride the redneck reality gravy train.

Living in NJ - Yeah, our taxes fucking blow ,and they continue to blow year after year. Same with our insurance rates which are through the roof. The only upside is our gas is usually cheap.
PA - This couldn't be more true, something burns down in PA for insurance fraud like every week where we are (30-45min below Binghamton NY). The guy who owned our 3rd house before us burnt the original structure down to the ground so he could build a newer, bigger house. Then when he needed more insurance money, he lit the second story of THAT one on fire! Both were "electrical fires" caused by " accidents".
WA - If anyone remembers the infamous internet video "Mr. Hands", this was filmed in WA due to a loophole in the laws about having sex with animals. After that guy got assraped to death that loophole was closed up.

27 of 1000 is a pretty big statistic compared to most things that make people freak out. Look at gun violence, it's 10.3 (or just slightly under) per 100,000 people and it's a huge issue... that means something that is 0.103 per 1000 has sent the population into a panic. How about that flu was that killing everyone on earth, but then did nothing? Yeah, that was 3.2 in it's optimum demographic (people 50-64) per 100,000 mortality rate or 0.032 per 1,000 (1.5 per 100,000 average for all ages).
People are stupid. They just pick something they are mad/excited/want to make money from and go on a crusade to make everyone else panic about it.

Fair point, yeah. Out of curiosity, though, is that gun thing deaths or just overall shootings? I'm sure it's nowhere near the "WE NEED TO ACT NOW!!!" numbers, but that does seem a bit low. I guess it probably isn't taking into account incidences where the gun isn't actually fired, like robberies. I dunno.

That's total firearm violence including accidents according to the FBI national statistics for 2012. Deliberate use of violence is one of those hard things to get statistics for because regardless of if it's a bazooka or baseball bat, rarely does anyone admit their goal was to kill the person they hit with it.
Edit: Side note, weapons (all including knives, guns, bats, etc) are only used in about 22% of violent crime annually.

I'm sorry, but these statistics do not conform to my perception of the reality, so I will choose to ignore them. Seriously, though, I think I'll look into this a bit myself. Even if, as your links suggest, graduation rates aren't as bad as this map portrays, I still believe that there are serious issues with education funding, the SBOE, the curriculum in general, and the STAAR Test.
![]() 01/10/2014 at 14:33 |

I agree that we still need to improve education in the state. And honestly, I was shocked when I looked up the numbers on our graduation rates. I thought they were much lower than that.

Chicago and its metro area. Interstate speed limits that haven't been been raised since the National Maximum Speed Law (55 mph on like 95% of Interstates). Shitty roads and sidewalks, faded road markings, POTHOLES OH MY GOD POTHOLES, etc. High taxes. Speed cameras everywhere in Chicago. Corrupt spending of tax money. Public school teacher pension is in the negative millions I think. It seems whatever left of our tax money only goes to downtown beautification.

The binge drinking for wisconsin is pretty accurate. I live in a town of about 1400 people, we have 6 bars here. They are usually packed on the weekends, and still "busy" by all standards during the week. The local gas stations, both have "beer caves" huge walk in coolers, both in excess of 500 square feet.
